The number of Schengen countries has increased to 29 countries after Bulgaria and Romania fully jointed

The decision to fully join Bulgaria and Romania to join the Schengen area came into effect on Wednesday, January 1, 2025, as the countries agreed to include the two countries in the Schengen area by land after they had previously joined by sea and air since March 31, 2024, bringing the number of Schengen countries to 29 countries.

It is worth noting that Bulgaria and Romania became members of the European Union in 2007, and the “Schengen” area, which was launched by the 1985 agreement and began to be implemented in 1995, is one of the most prominent achievements of the European Union, as it allows free movement between member states by eliminating internal borders.
