About the Italy Remote Work Residence Program

Italy offers two different visa options for individuals who work remotely:

Digital Nomad Visa (DNV)

Designed for self-employed professionals and freelancers who provide their services remotely to clients and companies outside Italy.

Remote Worker Visa (RWV)

Designed for employees working for foreign companies who can perform their roles entirely remotely without being physically present at the company’s premises.

The program allows eligible applicants to reside legally in Italy while continuing to work for companies or clients outside the country and benefit from living in one of the European Union’s major economies.

Requirements and Eligibility for the Italy Remote Work Residence Program

Main Applicant Requirements

The main applicant must meet the following requirements:

Be at least 18 years of age.
Be a citizen of a country outside the European Union.
Have a clean criminal record.
Have at least 6 months of prior remote work experience in the relevant field.
For the Remote Worker Visa (RWV), the employing company must be located outside Italy. For the Digital Nomad Visa (DNV), the majority of the applicant’s clients must be located outside Italy.
Demonstrate an annual income of at least EUR 28,000–32,400. The required amount may vary depending on the relevant Italian consulate.
Hold valid private health insurance in Italy with coverage of EUR 30,000.
Provide a rental agreement or other proof of accommodation in Italy.
Demonstrate sufficient financial means to cover living expenses for the main applicant and family members.

Required Qualifications

The applicant must meet one of the following qualification requirements:

Academic Qualification

Hold a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree from a recognized university.
The duration of study must be at least 3 years.

Professional Qualification

Have at least 5 years of professional experience in the same field or specialization.
For managers and specialists in Information and Communication Technology (ICT), 3 years of professional experience obtained within the 7 years preceding the application may be sufficient.
Applicants working in regulated professions, such as doctors, engineers, and architects, may be required to obtain approval or accreditation from the relevant Italian authorities.

Family Member Requirements

Eligible family members may be included subject to the following conditions:

Spouse.
Children under 18 years of age.
Children over 18 years of age if they are financially dependent on the main applicant or have a physical or mental disability, subject to approval.
Parents aged 65 or older if they are financially dependent on the main applicant and have no other children able to support them, subject to approval.

Financial Requirements

Income requirements vary depending on the number of family members included in the application.

Minimum income for the main applicant:

EUR 28,000–32,400 per year.

Additional amount for a spouse:

Approximately EUR 9,900 per year.

Additional amount for each child:

Approximately EUR 4,950 per year.

For example, a family of four would need to demonstrate an income of approximately EUR 4,350 per month.
