Portugal Introduces New Jus Soli (Citizenship by Birth) Law

The Portuguese government has introduced a new law that awards children born in Portugal to legal residents of a year with direct Portuguese citizenship. This is especially important for Golden Visa Holders.

The Portuguese golden visa, a program that awards those who invest a minimum of 280,000 in real estate within Portugal with a residency card. This residency status is bound by holding on to the real estate for 5 years and spending an astonishingly reasonable 14 days per 2 years in Portugal.

As golden visa holders are considered as legal residents by spending 7 days per year in Portugal, if they were to give birth to their child in the EU nation after one year of obtaining the visa then that child would be granted direct Portuguese citizenship and the world’s 6th strongest passport.
