The D8 Visa, also known as the Portugal Digital Nomad Visa, is intended for people from outside the European Union who work remotely and wish to move and settle in Portugal by providing a monthly income and the financial ability to cover their living expenses there.

This visa aims to attract freelancers, self-employed, and remote employees who work for companies outside Portugal, therefore contributing to the country’s local economy.

Applicant Requirements

The main applicant must fulfill the following requirements:

  • Be over 18 years old.
  • Have a clean criminal record.
  • Prove that he/she works remotely and has the financial solvency to cover the cost of living in Portugal (details attached below).

Family Requirements

Eligible family members may be included who fulfill the following conditions:

  • The main applicant’s spouse.
  • Children under 18 years of age.
  • Children 18 and over, unmarried and enrolled in full-time education in Portugal.
  • Parents of the main applicant and spouse over 65 years of age who live with the applicant and are fully dependent on him/her.

Costs required to obtain The D8 Digital Nomad Visa in Portugal

 

The costs required to obtain a residency permit in Portugal D8 depend on the following:

  • Proof of a monthly income of at least 4 minimum wages in Portugal, as the minimum in the country is (870 EUR) and changes from time to time, so 4 minimum wages are equal to 3,480 EUR per month.
  • Proof of bank savings to cover the cost of living in Portugal.

The costs also increase according to the number of family members, according to the following:

  • The applicant

Must prove an income equal to 100% of the 4 minimum wages (3,480 EUR).

  • Spouse or parents

Must prove an additional income equal to 50% of the 4 minimum wage for each person (1,740 EUR).

  • Dependent children

Must prove an additional income equivalent to 30% of the 4 minimum wages for each child (1,044 EUR).

 

Note: It is advisable to hold a minimum amount equal to 12 months’ income within a Portuguese bank account.

  • Travel to Portugal.
  • Submit the residence application and biometric information to the Immigration Office.
  • Receive a 2-year residence card.
