The UK Officially Implements the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) System

The United Kingdom has fully implemented the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system as of 25 February 2026. The new requirement applies to all travellers from visa-exempt countries, who must now obtain digital pre-travel authorisation before flying to the UK. Under the new rules, passengers will not be allowed to board their flight without a valid ETA authorization, as airlines must deny boarding to anyone who does not hold the approved authorization.

The measure covers nationals of 85 countries, including holders of US passports, several Caribbean countries, and other European visa-exempt travellers. The ETA fee is £16 and allows multiple visits during its two-year validity period, or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. The authorisation is electronically linked to the passport, with no paper document required.

According to the UK Home Office, the full rollout of the system represents a strategic step toward the digitalisation of the immigration process and the strengthening of border security. Applications are submitted online via the UK ETA app or the official website, and most are approved within minutes. However, travellers are advised to apply at least three working days before departure in case additional review is required.

It is important to note that the ETA is not a visa. It is a digital travel authorisation that enables UK authorities to conduct advance security screening before departure, enhance border control, and speed up entry procedures upon arrival.
