Portugal has announced the adoption of a modern digital system for renewing residency permits, effective from February 2, 2026, through the online renewal portal of the Agency for Integration, Migration, and Asylum (AIMA). This system represents a significant step forward in streamlining the residence permit renewal process.
Starting from the specified date, holders of Portuguese residency permits will be able to submit their renewal applications online without needing to visit the relevant offices in the first stage. The online submission process includes:
- Completing the residency permit renewal application online
- Paying the required fees directly through the platform
Regarding biometric data, AIMA will first review the renewal application, after which it will be decided whether a personal appointment for biometric registration is necessary. This change helps reduce pressure on appointment schedules.
Despite these positive updates, there are some key points to note:
- The online renewal portal cannot be accessed from outside Portugal, so applicants abroad may need to appoint a lawyer or legal representative within Portugal to submit the application on their behalf and ensure the process is completed correctly.
- Individuals with previously confirmed biometric appointments before the launch of the digital system must still attend their scheduled appointment to complete biometric registration.
