Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides announced that Cyprus is nearing completion of the technical preparations for full accession to the 29-member Schengen Area in 2026, a historic step that will enhance freedom of movement and security at European borders. He emphasized that the government is working closely with the European Commission to ensure all technical requirements are met, reflecting Cyprus’s status as a reliable and secure partner in the region.
Joining Schengen is a key priority in Cyprus’s foreign policy, which is based on openness and a Western European orientation. This coincides with Cyprus assuming the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, which strengthens its role on the European stage and reinforces its relations with regional partners.
Preparations include upgrading digital border management systems and linking them to common European platforms, including the Schengen Information System (SIS) and the Entry and Exit System (EES). The government is also working to launch more than 100 new digital services to simplify administrative procedures both domestically and across borders, reflecting Cyprus’s commitment to digital transformation and complete administrative modernization.
