As per the Foreign Ministry in the Republic of Cyprus, the country has applied for membership of the Schengen area in September 2019 and is expected to obtain membership in the upcoming future.

The Schengen area was first formed in the year 1985, and members of the Schengen area can enjoy free travelling and movement to any member state.

The Republic of Cyprus has been a member of the European Union since the year 2004, and by joining the Schengen area, Cypriot passport holders will be able to move across Schengen countries without going through passport control, with the ability to benefit from the goods and trades facilitated movement across many European countries.
