The European Commission (EC) has said that the Entry/Exit System (EES) will come into effect starting October 12, 2025, and will be rolled out gradually over six months across all EU member states and Schengen Area countries.
The new EES system will record the entry and exit data of non-EU nationals, whether they require a visa or not, such as holders of Caribbean, Canadian, and U.S. passports, among others.
The EES will replace the traditional passport stamping process. It is a regulatory mechanism that automatically tracks the movement of travelers from outside the EU using biometric technologies such as fingerprints and facial images. Its objectives include:
- Enhancing border security.
- Detecting irregular stays.
- Facilitating travel procedures.
- Ensuring the highest standards of data protection and privacy.
