On 5 January 2024, the Portuguese Parliament approved changes to the country’s citizenship law that will allow residents to start counting their five years for Portuguese citizenship from the date of residency application is submitted rather than the date of application is approved.
The new Portuguese Citizenship Law will enter into force one month after its publication in the Official Gazette, after presidential ratification.
