You can sponsor some of your relatives for permanent residency in Canada under the family sponsorship category. To be eligible to sponsor relatives, you must be over 18 years old and either a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada.

To qualify for this program, applicants must meet specific income requirements and demonstrate financial ability to support their relatives for up to 20 years (starting with the relatives obtaining permanent residency in Canada and it varies according to the relative age and how you’re related). Applicants are also required to provide a written commitment to this effect.

Types of relatives eligible for sponsorship for permanent residency in Canada

The types of relatives eligible for permanent residence sponsorship in Canada are as follows:

  • Orphaned relatives

You can sponsor siblings, nieces, nephews, or grandchildren who have lost both parents, provided the person you want to sponsor is under 18 years old and unmarried.

  • Other relatives of any age

You can sponsor other relatives, whether related by blood or adoption, as long as you meet the following conditions:

  • The applicant should not have any other relatives that can be sponsored, such as a spouse, partner, dependent children, parents, grandparents, or orphaned siblings.
  • The applicant should not have any relatives in Canada who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents.

Under this program, the applicant must obtain the government approval as a qualified sponsor and apply for their relatives to obtain the permanent residency at the same time. Applicants are required to fill out all the forms and applications specified by the Canadian Citizenship and Immigration Department, pay processing fees, permanent residency application fees, and identity verification fees.
